Description

This huge library belonging to the Pompeu Fabra University is the result of the restoration and rehabilitation of an old water cistern, built in 1874 to irrigate Ciutadella park and to regulate the flow of its waterfall. Built according to a Roman prototype, parallel rows of arches 14 metres high and one metre wide are arranged along barrel vaults. An impressive space not originally conceived to be habited, the intervention of Lluís Clotet and Ignacio Paricio has transformed it into a library with an atmosphere conducive to reflection and study. The architectural project uses independent prefabricated elements that seek to respect the original construction without copying it. Several levels are created to enable reading and study in different environments to suit the needs of each student.
