Description
The new SESC unit - complex set of recreational facilities and services - according to a specific program prepared by the entity, located on the corner of Rua 24 de Maio and Rua Dom José de Barros is an exemplary transformation problem in the urban heritage built. With these horizons, the proposed project adopted the following order of basic ideas:1 .Recover, make the most of the existing construction, demolishing additions made subsequent to the original building, mainly in order to clear up spaces and make the whole complex breathe better and also install them in a manner more appropriate to the new ones.2. Concentrate and isolate the technical and mainly mechanical facilities to support the various activities suggested in the entity's program, attaching, for this purpose, the contiguous property on Rua Dom José de Barros – abandoned for a few years – with a projection measuring 7.00m X 20.00m for the construction of an auxiliary complex for services and machines.3. Associate, two by two, some floors of the building to organize some important spaces of the program, with a large hall with double ceiling height and upper and overt galleries, in order to value spaces and avoid simple monotony. For example: Large Exhibition Hall and Workshop Gallery 4. Organize a vertical circulation system, in accordance with the standards, that is efficient and clear, and mainly ensure a set of ramps that runs through the entire space of the building, that in addition to its strict function, also brings life to the complex in its daily life, in a loose and fun manner, an outing.5. Highlight and ensure autonomy to the complex: stairway, café balcony, box office, theater, rehearsals, dressing rooms. Direct and clearly connected to the ground floor of the city.6. Ensure extensive and clear implementation at the pedestrian level in the city, providing a feeling of a “public walkway” and shelter in a covered square – SESC Square.7. Distinguish the Restaurant, for free public use, immediately above the Plaza complex and SESC reception.8. Provide some spaces at strategic levels in the sense of covered squares, without a fence along the facades, hanging gardens – Coexistence Square, Pool Garden.9. Construct a Solarium with a swimming pool, in the open-air, associated with convenient changing rooms and an open pavement with a caféand serving small meals – Pool Garden – forming, with the ramps, a peculiar set of three floors for one type of specific recreation.10. To carry out these basic transformations that in fact characterize the proposed project, from the point of view of the construction techniquesin addition to the aforementioned demolitions, the following measures were adopted: • demolishing of the covered lobby of the former Mesbla department store to create an empty space inside the existing building;• building of a new, independent structure, supported by four pillars that support the large interspersed halls – mentioned in item 3 – and the solarium with swimming pool;• lowering, somewhat, of the area of the current underground garage to complete the space of the Theater and its annexes. With these considerations, it is also worth remembering the notable place for this new “garden”: Tea Viaduct, Municipal Theater, Barão de Itapetininga, Av. São João, Praça da República and all the theaters, bookshops, restaurants and cafés, in the surrounding area, so famous in the city.(Description provided by the architects)
