Description

The project designed for this exhibition and contemporary creation centre seeks to reuse an old brick school building.According to the designers of this project, PS1 was conceived ‘as a canvas, not a monument. It adapts to the art it holds’.  At the heart of the renovation project was the design of a new space management programme to accommodate new forms of contemporary art. The design was based on a collaborative process in which curators, gallerists, artists and local community groups were invited to participate. The project maintains the presence of the original building and adds a new outdoor space for outdoor art activities delimited by a simple perimeter wall of exposed concrete. This outdoor space is the setting for the annual competition for young architects, in which each year a project is chosen to transform the space during the summer months. The MoMA PS1 building has become a landmark in the cultural life of the city, especially for young people.
