Description
This large transportation hub has been designed as a space of remembrance of the September 11th attacks in New York. The large, open underground space is filled with natural light, symbolising hope in times of tragedy. In the words of Santiago Calatrava, the white steel ribs of the shell are “columns of light” supporting a large gap designed so that once a year a great stream of light reaches the bottom. This large monumental space functions as a break in the crowded public transportation system, offering citizens a moment of contemplation in their hectic daily routines.
