Description

"Rewilding is the act of making wild a space that has ceased to be wild by the building action of man. Our goal is to naturalize cities by reintroducing living spaces over the built ones." With this manifesto, MataAlta Estudio, winners in 2021 of the New European Bauhaus Award in the category of "preservation and transformation of cultural heritage", presents its activity. In the heart of Barcelona, this project aims to turn into wild gardens some spaces that, with the Covid-19, have become part of our daily life: the rooftops. So far it has been working on the roofs of six buildings, but its ambition is to extend over some 5,000 square meters. It is an example of the studio's idiosyncratic, nature-based solutions that integrate biophilia, landscaping, architecture, urban planning and engineering. These "floating" gardens reclaim space in two ways: they make the city more habitable for animal and plant species, and they offer new places for socializing and even working. The project includes a rainwater reuse system for irrigation as well as solar panels that power the recirculation pump.(Description provided by the architects)
