Description
On the outskirts of Villanueva de la Serena, where the urban edge meets the rural atmosphere, stands this architectural marvel. Not only does it house an auditorium, but it also artfully cultivates a public space that is welcoming and open. As we approach the venue, the only visible feature is a striking landmark in the shape of a rounded cube. If you are lucky, you can even hear the melody emanating from the subterranean level beneath it, wrapped in a lattice of ropes. In fact, this huge cube not only houses the auditorium’s stage box, but also a rooftop restaurant that offers sweeping views of the horizon. The rest of the project plan is hidden from passers-by underground. The site is actually a park, part of which has been sunken to form a gently sloping square leading to the entrance. The two auditoriums are located below level 0, one in each wing, allowing them to be used simultaneously. Both are clad in green polycarbonate and partially lit from above by natural light, creating a mystical setting that immerses the audience in the imaginative world of music. This optimistic project has succeeded in creating a distinctive place in a challenging location, generating references that connect with the local culture and optimising energy use through smart design choices, such as the simple step of implementing the programme underground. An example of smart and fresh design in the rural environment, brilliantly representing the new generation of architects.
