Description

This public space project faces the challenge of intervening in one of the most culturally diverse neighbourhoods in Europe. Rather than approaching it in a neutral manner, the architects opted for a tapestry that symbolically reflects the plural identity of the neighbourhood through urban objects. The one and a half mile area is divided into three zones in three different colours: black, red and green. The red zone consists of a tapestry of different shades of the same colour, which appears as a continuation of the adjacent façades, including the sports centre building, which is accessed from the square. The black zone contains most of the street furniture elements chosen by the neighbours and acts as a meeting place for the community. The white lines on the surface emphasise the linearity of the overall plan and the artificial topography created. Finally, the green zone responds to a historical demand from the neighbourhood for more trees and vegetation. An exercise in citizen participation that made everyone feel represented in their cultural imaginary.
