Description

Makoko Floating System (MFSTM) is a simple way for people to build on water by hand. It is a prefabricated, modular, floating, timber structure that can be assembled manually for developments on water in different regions. The iconic triangular shaped structure is ideal for flotation due to its low center of gravity and the rigid A-frame that gives it stability and balance - making MFS one of the few and exceptional three floor floating buildings existing in the world. In 2012 NLÉ created the first prototype ‘Makoko Floating School’, a building concept conceived to address significant issues faced by many of today’s major world cities - rapidly expanding urban development and the impacts of climate change. The prototype was developedwith a vision to create a locally adaptive and scalable building system, designed to transform how we urbanize areas around water. Particularly with the fact that over 80% of the world’s major cities are situated by water – many of which are prone to sea level rise, flooding and rapidgrowth – particularly on the Asian and African continents. The award winning, globally acclaimed Makoko Floating School was built for and with the historic water community of Makoko, located on the lagoon heart of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos. Inspired by the resilient and resourcefulness of Makoko community, who built so much with so little, MFS was developed in an effort to create an affordable housing solution for many communities and cities next to water around the world. The first prototype was built in the most challenging context by learning from Makoko and then improved over the years to standardised floating vessels or multi unit clusters for expanding communities and developing whole new cities on water.(Description provided by NLÉ)
