Description

This project by AS+ was the winner of a major competition thanks mainly to its focus on the green belt resulting from the burying of the new railway line through the city, connecting a hitherto socially segregated route and transforming it into a new pedestrian green route in which the stations cease to be ‘original’ iconic objects and become a ‘hill’ or watchtower, a viewpoint over the city and its natural surroundings. Both the train station and the bus station are configured as ‘public caves’, reminiscent of the many wineries in La Rioja region. Thanks to well-organised management, the project was completed within the original budget. The urban park created on its roof connects the north and south of the urban fabric, providing a central space for the new residential neighbourhood that surrounds it. Both the train station and the bus station connect under a large urban dome with a span of 60 metres. While the design of the train station focuses on the transition from the entrance to the platforms, the design of the bus station, with its traditional horseshoe shape, accentuates the connection of the waiting room with the park on its roof by means of a staircase leading to the light and dominating the space. The complex obtained BREEAM certification in the urban planning category, the second project to achieve this recognition in Spain.(Description provided by the architects)
