Description
In 1934 a group of visionary workers with an innovative spirit and ahead of their time chose Josep Lluís Sert and Josep Torres Clavé to design a functional building that would convey their ideals of opening up at the time. The rationalist architecture of these GATCPAC members corresponded perfectly to these wills with a building with open-plan interiors, bright and open to the public space. The objective of the rehabilitation has been to recover the original architecture and adapt its use, providing it with the benefits of contemporary public use equipment. To this end, superfluous subsequent interventions have been eliminated and the free-plan structure of metal pillars, the metal profile slabs and vaults and the main façade at its primitive colours have been recovered. Some of the remaining original finishes, which fortunately are still preserved, have been restored and valued such as the circular staircase, the railings and the carpentry. The placement of a new elevator at a strategic point in the building and a new staircase in the rear bay allow access from the street to all floors for their new current and future use.Once adapted to current needs, the building is destined for multipurpose uses linked to the city's young entrepreneurship, in clear reference to its origin: the dream of a group of workers who left a legacy that is at the same time a symbol of the movement cooperative and the testimony of an architectural style.(Description provided by Meritxell Inaraja)
