Description
The Sant Antoni Market, designed by architect Antoni Rovira i Trias and the engineer José M Cornet i Mas in 1882, is one of the most iconic public buildings in the Eixample district of Barcelona. Occupying an entire block and shaped like a Greek cross, it reproduces, in shape and size, design outlines that are typical of this district of the city. The central octagon, crowned by a high dome, recreates a cross in the style of the Cerdà Plan. Its strategic position in relation to the Ciutat Vella (Old City) and the ring road formed by the Ronda, has turned it into shopping hub that extends beyond the actual building and brings meaning to the whole of the surrounding district. The renovation project proposes the complete restoration of the historical structure and the construction of 4 underground floors to house a new shopping mall and related services such as warehouses, spaces for facilities, loading and unloading and parking. With the restoration of structural and enclosure elements, the building’s refurbishment highlights its monumental and historical heritage.(Description provided by the architects)
