Description

The Barceloneta Market and Square identified the characteristics of the neighborhood to reveal its qualities and to describe them accurately through the project. The project seeks to form part of the neighborhood, its urban fabric, and is redirected toward the square that was reintroduced for the building and the neighborhood community to breath.César Manrique’s fantastic fish, drawings for children embodied and expressed the joy of the people living in the neighborhood, became a reference to the liveliness, energy and enthusiasm in the face of frequent hardship, which was to be expressed in the building. The metal figures inspired by the fish drawings and the liveliness of the market structure itself, created an open structure. A structure with a false equilibrium, never really overlapping, withholding the old building itself, while taming it and opening it up to a new narrative yet to come. The Barceloneta Market becomes a fusion of the memory of the past, while uncurling and succeeding towards a future to be discovered.(Description provided by the architects)
