Description

This great work by Niemeyer must have been built in the 1950s as part of a project commemorating the city's fourth centenary. However, it took half a century to wait to finally see the building completed at the beginning of the 21st century, with significant and logical modifications, which updated it to the new situation. The volume of the building, with a triangular section, rests on the ground as if it were a gigantic wedge left in the park. The entrance is located in the lower part of the inclined plane, welcoming visitors with a large red canopy. Once inside, a sculptural ramp by Tomie Ohtake leads the audience to the auditorium, located at the rear. The auditorium is reversible. In case of outdoors performances a rear door facing the park would open show the scene.
