Description

Mid-20th century social housing is becoming obsolete, and this sometimes leads to marginalisation on the outskirts of French cities. This project addresses this problem.Contrary to the opinion of those who advocate the demolition of these large residential buildings, Lacaton & Vassal proposes the upgrading of three of them, namely blocks G, H and I of the Cité du Grand Parc, in the Bourdeaux metropolitan area. As part of the project, an outer layer of winter gardens was added to the main façades of the buildings. As a result, the small flats increase their surface area and their interior perception is completely redefined. Existing windows become doors that open up panoramic views of the city while promoting natural light and spatial fluidity. In addition, the new flats offer their inhabitants the possibility to enjoy outdoor spaces, thus improving the quality of life and self-esteem of these often stigmatised people. This project is undoubtedly a strategy for the future with which to move towards sustainable architecture at the service of social needs.
