Description

This project, devised by Nishizawa in collaboration with artist Rei Naito, was created for the Setouchi Triennale in 2010. Inspired by a water droplet held by its own surface tension, the pavilion features a reinforced concrete shell no more than 25 cm thick, which required more than 100 strength tests.  The shell only opens at two points, allowing rain and noise from the nearby forest to enter. Visitors are required to take off their shoes to enter the space, which prepares them for a near-spiritual experience. A space where boundaries blur and the sensory experience intensifies dramatically. This delicate work of art set against the landscape of Teshima island is the result of a happy marriage between art and architecture.
