Description

Doshi’s architectural work combines the language of modern architecture with a keen sense of the vernacular. The Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore draws on his experience working with Louis Kahn in the construction of the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad. In this project, the ambiguous spaces between indoors and outdoors, as well as the control of air flows between the volumes, are inspired both by the works of Kahn and Le Corbusier and by traditional Indian architecture. In fact, Doshi defined the complex as an Indian city dedicated to education, with its plazas, galleries, stairs, balconies and other spaces in between, which are an important part of Indian urbanism. The complex and sometimes labyrinthine network of campus spaces features a construction system consisting of concrete porticoes and brick walls. Thus, through the use of these materials, the project also embodies the dialogue between modernity and tradition.
