Description
With the aim of bringing its activity closer to society as a whole, the University of Vigo, whose main campus is 10 km from the city centre, commissioned the refurbishment of three buildings in the historic city centre.A wooden volume rests on the stone portico which, together with a part of the façades and the party walls, are the only remains of the old buildings. A volume within a volume; wood and stone. The wooden volume is entirely made of wood, including its structure and construction, but it has modern industrialised systems to optimise the use of the material and its performance over time. The project took its inspiration from shipbuilding, but using the latest developments in R+D, in keeping with the purpose of the building. The choice of material and its construction system allow the new building to be integrated into the local tradition while retaining a touch of contemporaneity. On the west elevation, the stone porticoes and the remains of the old façade, also in stone, were restored. The arches support the new construction, whose foundations were reinforced with micropiles along the central area, slabs on part of the perimeter and stone at the rear.
