Historically linked to the industrial sector, Avilés is an Asturian city located near its port. Deindustrialisation at the end of the twentieth century led to the city’s decline and the erosion of its self-esteem. Inspired by Bilbao’s strategy, the city is embarking on a journey of rejuvenation through cultural initiatives and cutting-edge architectural projects. In this context, the cultural centre project designed by Oscar Niemeyer, a leading figure in modern architecture, stands out. In this case, Brasilia’s architect once again shows his penchant for the fluidity of curved geometry, a testament to the sensual allure he aims for in his designs. Four geometrically distinct volumes are arranged on a vast esplanade on the estuary, accessible by a footbridge from the historic city centre. A large white concrete dome, built using an innovative construction system that incorporates a PVC membrane, houses the main exhibition space, dedicated to temporary exhibitions. Connected to the dome by a suspended walkway that curves gracefully over the large plaza, the auditorium seats 1,000 and has an atrium that doubles as an exhibition space. The theatre scene has the peculiarity of being able to be reversed. Weather permitting, the space can be turned into an outdoor venue for open-air concerts attended by more than 10,000 people. Nestled between two large bodies is a tower supported by a solid cylindrical concrete shaft, from which the restaurant and viewing platform hang. A final arched section encloses the plaza and houses the offices of the cultural centre, the ticket office and a cafeteria. Niemeyer’s only work in Spain offers a unique opportunity to discover the architect’s immaculate white designs. A stroll around the large public square allows visitors to experience first-hand the utopian, optimistic and democratic impulse of modernity represented by the Brazilian master.
