Description
The Official Association of Madrid Architects (COAM, in Spanish) has inaugurated its new building, which fits perfectly into the compact landscape of Chueca, the former site of the Escuelas Pías de San Antón religious school. An agreement signed between the COAM and Madrid City Council facilitated the launch of a tender process for the new school headquarters, as well as several community facilities to be included in the complex. Moure’s award-winning project aims to bring a new level of accessibility to the neighbourhood by introducing an open garden in the centre of the block, responding to the need for a public meeting space in the area. The various functions required by the programme are structured around it and are met by the construction of volumes that preserve the external appearance of the 18th-century façades, while allowing a clear view of the courtyard. Channelling a Miesian architectural style, the new volumes are designed with a visible metal framework and make economical use of materials – mainly granite and wood. The internal space at garden level is thoughtfully designed as an extension of the garden, offering incredible versatility for hosting events and showcasing exhibitions. Visitors can access the central garden from three different points. The main entrance is through the entrance hall of the COAM headquarters. The secondary entrance is through the café, which is enclosed by a lattice that doubles as a garden lantern at dusk. The final route is through the community facilities block, which houses a nursery, a day centre for the elderly and a rooftop swimming pool with spectacular views of the city. This project illustrates the potential of architecture to elevate the standard of urban living by merging different functional programmes and revealing unexpected spaces for the community.
