Description
The Blackbirds project consists of a cluster of homes built around an interior courtyard shared by its neighbours. The development is integrated into its urban surroundings by its contained scale and houses that mimic the craftsman cabins that used to be typical of the area. The project also manages to deliver a higher density of housing units than in the surrounding neighbourhood as each of the units contains more than one home. In effect, the design succeeds in creating a lifestyle based on community and interactions between neighbours, in contrast to the single-family dwellings that dominate much of Los Angeles.
