Description

Within the isotropic weave of 20 m-wide streets, Cerdà (1859) planned some main avenues 50 m-wide, with a road in the middle and pavements with two rows of trees. El Passeig de St Joan is one of these. The new refurbishment proposal for this main avenue has two main objectives: to give pedestrians priority on the street and make a green, urban corridor as far as the Ciutadella Park. To achieve both objectives, the project has been developed taking three basic urbanisation criteria into consideration: In the first instance, what is key is guaranteeing continuity of the section along the route. The new boulevard section is symmetrical and extends the current 12.5 m pavements to 17 m wide, retaining the hundred-year-old existing trees (banana palms) and adding two new lines of trees. The route’s continuity is fundamental to guarantee the operational clarity of the axis along its path.Secondly, it is fundamental that the urban space should accommodate different uses. The new proposal should take into account the diversity of uses of urban space, making its pleasant coexistence possible.(Description provided by the architects)
