Descripción

Wadi Hanifa is one of the most important river valleys in Saudi Arabia. Intensive human use along its course has led to soil and ecosystem degradation, which this project aims to reverse. Thanks to this initiative, a process of renaturalisation of the riverbed has begun, through the implementation of actions aimed at making the habitat of animal and plant species compatible with human use. The multidisciplinary approach is key to the process. The strategy promotes the use of the riverbed as a public space as it flows through Riyadh, while implementing state-of-the-art water treatment technologies. The aim is to use the city’s water to develop the river ecosystem. In this way, human input of wastewater becomes an asset rather than a problem for urban and natural life. The project draws on a detailed analysis of the vegetation in each stretch of the river and the species that live there, as well as the cultural reality of the city’s inhabitants.
