Description

A park in the middle of the infrastructures that generates its own landscape, prolonging the public space of the city and spreading the vegetation along the infrastructures. The Trinidad interchange is a complex road infrastructure located northeast of Barcelona, in an old bend of the Besos river, next to the Trinidad neighborhood. The Ronda de Dalt, the Ronda Litoral, and three highways coincide in it: the C-58, the C-33, and the B-20.This infrastructure is also adjacent to the Paseo de Santa Coloma and the Trinidad neighborhood located approximately twelve meters above the bed of the meander. The complexity of the road layout gives rise to an overlap of structures, crossings at different levels, and tunnels with a difference of up to fifteen meters between them at some points. The basic objective was to order, urbanize and provide public content, the free spaces resulting from the construction of the interchange, as well as to relate these with the consolidated nucleus of the Trinidad neighborhood, with the adjacent neighborhoods (Santa Coloma de Gramanet, Sant Andreu del Palomar, La Sagrera, etc.) through Paseo de Santa Coloma and with the rest of the city through a newly created Metro station. The project was based on a general consideration of the environment that allowed us to understand the treatment of the junction and the motorway links, not as a sum of diverse solutions, but from the perspective of a single project unit where vegetation, hydraulics, the topography, equipment, and public spaces are governed from a single layout idea.Of all the free spaces resulting from the layout of the interchange, undoubtedly the largest and most interesting was the central circle. About 300 meters in diameter, cut off on its southern side by the train’s route, the Parque de la Trinidad is located practically at the natural level of the meander. The project assumes as its own objective to facilitate access to the interior of the park from the neighborhood, through an access plaza, from the surroundings, through a connection below the infrastructures with the Passeig de Santa Coloma and from the metropolitan area, by inserting inside a Metro station that in turn connects the different topographic levels with mechanical systems. It also seeks to reduce both the visual and acoustic impact of the new roads on the neighborhood and on the park itself, as well as, to fulfill an extensive program of equipment and endowment services demanded by the residents. The geometry of the interchange becomes the design instrument of the project from which to develop all the areas of the program: parking, sports facilities, promenade, amphitheater, pond, paths, and groves. The species used in the plantations are the characteristics of the agrarian landscape in the immediate surroundings: cypress barriers of Ampurdán, meadows of poplars and plane trees of Girona, olive trees of Tarragona, or fruit trees mounted on metallic structures of Lleida. The use of vegetation as a means of modifying the scale of the site is reinforced by a topography focused on a single formal effect: a hill in the shape of a spherical cap that rises from the lowest point of the land until it is almost at the height of the motorways. The vegetal alignments that follow the river bank enter the park and go up the hill accentuating its topography.(Description provided by the architects)
